Fall Equinox Friday Five

Over at RevGalBlogPals, Songbird writes: It's that time of year, at least north of the equator. The windows are still open, but the darned furnace comes on early in the morning. [Note from DogBlogger: you're making some Southerners jealous here!] My husband went out for a walk after an early supper and came home in full darkness.

And yes, where we live, leaves are beginning to turn.

As this vivid season begins, tell us five favorite things about fall:

1) A fragrance: That mixture of freshly-mown grass and dried leaves in the air, which is cooler than it has been in months. Preferably on a Friday night, when it evokes the best kind of memories of high school football season.

2) A color: Red. Whenever we take a drive into the mountains in autumn (less often in recent years), I always look for the red trees amid the oranges and yellows.

3) An item of clothing: The faded green, blue, and tan leather jacket I've had since college and have no intention of replacing any time soon.

4) An activity: How 'bout a couple? a) Doing stuff outdoors without sweating; and b) having homemade chili and/or vegetable steak soup.

5) A special day: My birthday is in the autumn!

YES! Football and chili! Yes!!! Mr. M and I are going to a HS football game next Friday... it'll be his first one ever! I'm really excited about it.

hmmm, it isn't really cold enough here for that first pot of chili, but the time will be coming soon.

Happy upcoming (?) birthday. Yep, it's almost chili and soup time again. Some of my favorite stuff too.

Ack! The internets ate my comment, I think.
I agree, those of us in the South are a little jealous, and fall is a time for us to watch the tropical weather forecast.
But I forgot football! How did I manage that? Oh yeah, I'm not from Texas.
Happy early birthday!

Ha! Just for the record, revanne, I'm not *from* Texas; it's just where I live. My affinity for football (which is pretty weak these days, to be honest) was developed in Arkansas.

Great play, and I especially like #4. I'm going to make some chili soon, but today it will be yellow pea soup with a hambone.

Red seems to be the color of choice. And I love the home made chili idea as well. It's one of my favs. Great play!

A fall soup picnic...I'm in!

One year I made a pork stew with potatoes, tomatoes and cubed butternut squash in it -- I think it had sage and rosemary as major seasonings...good stuff, Maynard. Now I'm itchin' to make some again.

Haven't quite got to chili yet. Cooler weather is nice though. Football, you mean the thing that happens on either side of the band show?

I always enjoy the first pot of soup in the season as well. I bought leeks today for what may be one of our last ones before summer.
